It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime had a half-year pause that started in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to supply fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series covering one chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.
This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple at most releasing each year, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
